'Trapped in a Dreadful Dream': Relatives of Unaccounted For Teens Await News After Alpine Inferno
The families of teens unaccounted for after a tragic blaze at a venue in a Switzerland's ski resort are confronting an excruciating wait for official news and requesting information about their loved ones online.
The fire ripped through the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the Alps of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of the first day of the year. Circulated images depict the ceiling catching alight as bottles with sparklers are held aloft.
Officials have indicated that it could take days if not weeks to identify the those who perished of the disaster, which resulted in the death of numerous partygoers and hurt another scores more. Officials stated on the latest update that the majority of the those hurt have been identified, with efforts still underway to locate the final individuals.
In the waiting period, relatives have been taking to social media to request clues about their loved ones who were in attendance that night.
Heartbreaking Pleas for the Missing
The whereabouts of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are currently unknown, according to an public plea from his mother.
The resident of Lutry near Lausanne, informed a publication that she had returned to Lausanne to see if he was in the medical facility, while his father did the equivalent search in Bern, but was unsuccessful.
"This is a living nightmare, a nightmare. The options are finding my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. Words cannot describe it," she told the paper.
She continued that some of his companions had been discovered with injuries covering a significant portion of their bodies. "There are no words; they experienced a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian foreign ministry has said that six of its nationals remain missing.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old sportsman, originally from Italy but now residing in the UAE.
The national sporting body has said that he is dead, without mentioning the tragedy, paying tribute to a "young athlete who represented dedication and true sportsmanship."
His father, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around the new year. An representative has clarified that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Other Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also among the missing. His mother told reporters that he had been on holiday but had gone out with a group and ended up at the bar.
"A companion told me they fled after the fire broke out and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a specific moment he couldn't see him anymore," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his educators stated, "I remember his kindness and smile, alongside great maturity. Often offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Greek and Swiss nationality but lives permanently in the country, was also present on New Year's Eve, according to reports.
Her brother has shared an appeal online, saying the family has had "no updates" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Officials from her country of origin say they are closely watching the situation.
