The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
