The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
