SNAP Payments Expected to Cease for 41 Million During Ongoing Federal Shutdown

USDA officials stated this past weekend that monthly food benefits through a critical national support systems won't be issued next month because of the continuing federal closure.

Closure Continues Through Its Third Week

The government shutdown was in three and a half weeks at the time of the statement, coming after appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats asking the department to tap into emergency reserves to fund the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” the USDA stated. “At this time, there will be no benefits issued” on 1 November.

National Consequences

Over 40 million Americans depend on the regular assistance, according to official statistics. Some regions, such as New Mexico, dependence on this assistance reaches 21% of residents.

Internal communications seen by journalists indicated that federal authorities chose not to tap contingency funding for the upcoming payments.

Legislative Deadlock

Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked over how to finance and restart government operations.

Comments by the head of a budget research center noted that the White House had opportunities to act sooner to ensure continuous assistance.

“They had the ability and responsibility made moves earlier to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to push upper chamber Democrats to vote for a spending bill that would resume government operations.

Emergency Measures

Governors in two affected states activated emergency protocols recently to free up resources to combat potential hunger in anticipation of nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
