Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Ashes Team
The English team has opted for a 12-man squad just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man group, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
The England coach had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to provide some spin while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
