Pat Bamford Signs With the Blades Despite Initiating Derogatory Chants About Coach Chris Wilder
The striker has signed with Sheffield United only half a year after instigating disrespectful taunts targeting the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has signed a agreement joining the second-tier strugglers through the winter. Bamford's lengthy time at Elland Road concluded amicably in August.
One of Bamford’s last memorable actions while at Leeds included starting insulting chants about Chris Wilder amid the club’s success festivities this spring. Now, the one-cap England player will be playing for Wilder as the Blades’ manager seeks to pull the team he loves away from the relegation zone.
Previous Conflict Involving the Striker and the Manager
The pair had a past before Leeds moved up back to the Premier League the previous campaign while Sheffield United lost the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder called Bamford as “a muppet” when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and Sheffield United secured direct promotion whereas Leeds United missed out in the playoffs.
Reconciliation & Moving Forward
Everything appears to have been resolved with Sheffield United, the league's lowest scorers, in desperate need of a boost in attack and Bamford hoping to rejuvenate his career.
The Wilder chant went viral in April. An apologetic Bamford along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the next day.
Wilder said back then: “Spoke with Patrick recently and I have no issue whatsoever with that. I’m not sure regarding the words used from a fellow professional! But I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.
“We had 20 minutes and similarly I spoke to Daniel Farke as well and had a half-hour chat with him and he is a super guy, a top guy. Back in my playing days we used to give it and take it and that’s part and parcel of the game across all levels, even on Sunday league. I have no problem at all. I'm fine with the situation and I told him that to Patrick.”
