Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
